This boulder used to be marked on OS maps as 'cross, rems of' and the name of the hamlet is evocative enough. But there is no socket-hole for a shaft, only a ragged channel across the top. Legend has it this was to drain away the blood from Druid sacrifices. Sounds like ancient Church propaganda to me…
